2020 was a challenging year to say the least. It was full of loss, worry, stress and anxiety for a lot of us.
For me personally, it was like having multiple 20 pound sandbags thrown at me when I was least expecting them. Each one of them catching me off guard - forcing me to struggle as I catch my breath while frantically looking around in desperation to catch a glimpse at the next one that was going to blindside me.
And through it all I realized something. Something that throughout all of the chaos and uncontrollable circumstances that I found myself in, there was ONE thing that I could control...and that one thing was ME.
THE ONE THING I CAN ALWAYS CONTROL
"Forces beyond your control can take away everything you possess except one thing, your freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation. You cannot control what happens to you in life, but you can always control what you will feel and do about what happens to you." — Dr. Viktor E. Frankl, holocaust survivor and the author of Man’s Search for Meaning
I have learned that trying to focus my energy on controlling what happens to me in life is really hard, time consuming, mentally draining, and does not consistently produce the results that I want.
What I have found that works a lot better for me, is to focus on how I respond to what happens to me in life. I have had impressive things happen to me based on the way I have expressed myself. I realize that I can control my attitude, behaviour, and actions - but I have found that my initial reflex is not always aligned with how I want to be. This is where my journey for becoming a better Adam begins.
HOW I CAN BECOME A BETTER ADAM
The journey to become a better me begins with changing my reflexive mindset. The culture that I have surrounded myself with has a core belief that I must compete against the other people I am among in order to succeed or win in life - but I have found that this could not be further from the truth.
I have learned that competing against other people in order to win is extremely short-sighted and very short-lived. It is a hollow and empty accomplishment that made me feel worse than before I "won".
The belief that I now know which allows me to succeed and win in life is to compete against myself, and at the same time help other people. In the few times that I have done this I have accomplished more goals and felt such satisfaction that I know this is the foundation to truly living a wonderful life.
THE CONTINUOUS JOURNEY TO BEING A BETTER ADAM
I've realized that becoming a better me will never be fully realized, and that in of itself I find very exciting.
I know that there's always something, or someone, in my life I can affect for the better by making myself better. By always becoming a better version of myself is a challenge that feels pure and authentic while gives me a continuous sense of purpose. A purpose to not be better than anyone else, but to be better than who I am in this moment. A purpose which positively affects the people and things that I share my life's experiences with, and that makes me feel good in the process.
My journey will undoubtedly have some challenges, and I will be all the better for it. I invite and welcome you to watch, share, and/or engage in my journey - or even start your own journey - whatever feels right and good for you.
What I SHARE DURING MY JOURNEY
As I go through my journey of becoming a Better Adam, I'll be recording my experience through videos, podcasts, and articles. I want to be able to look back on what I was thinking, feeling, or how I handled a situation to give me a better understanding of what I do in certain situations.
This will also allow me to provide you with my in-the-moment thinking and feeling of my experiences throughout the process, and my thoughts about the outcomes I receive. My journey will undoubtedly have some very positive and very challenging moments, but all-in-all I think my journey will be valuable for me to document so that I can reflect on it.
I think that it could be valuable for you to also see, hear and read about my experiences, as I make mistakes, stumble, struggle and win. There is a lot that I have learned by others' experiences, that I hope you can learn from mine.
