IN The BEGINNING...
Adam Kent Aulenback was born in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia on July 11, 1977 and lived about 40 km away in Springfield. His dad worked at the Michelin Tire plant in Bridgewater, while his mom took care of him and his sister. They lived close to his Grandparents' farm, and spent a lot of days and nights there with his family.
GOING TO TOWN
The summer before Adam went into grade 3, he moved to Bridgewater with his mom and sister. It was a small town - roughly 5,000 people lived within the town limits - but quite a bit larger than the rural community he had moved from.
When Adam was 12, he started to make a little money by getting up at 5 am every morning to deliver newspapers to three different paper routes. At the age of 14, he began working for Canadian Tire where he primarily loaded and unloaded tractor trailers, pricing stock, and organized the warehouse.
Adam finished high school at Bridgewater High and completed a Sales and Marketing at the local Nova Scotia Community College.
INTO THE CITY
In 1997, Adam moved to Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia and home to around 350,000 people at the time. There he worked many different jobs, from security to sales, and moved from place-to-place around the city. In 1999, he met Sandrella, his future wife. It was Sandrella who opened his eyes to a whole-new world... literally.
TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD
Before meeting Adam, Sandrella had plans to move to Japan to teach English. After a couple of months apart, Adam made the life-changing experience to join her there. Together, they travelled Japan to sight-see, and learned about their unique history and culture.
While working in Japan, Adam had the opportunity to visit Hong Kong and South Korea a couple of times. For vacations, Adam and Sandrella travelled to Thailand, Singapore, and Bali which they remember as incredible experiences.
BACK TO THE TRUE NORTH, STRONG, and FRee
In 2002, Adam and Sandrella returned to Canada where they decided to settle down. In 2007, they bought a home in Halifax, and got married within the same year. Two years later, their daughter Jasmine was born and infused their life with more love and happiness.
JOINING THE CANADIAN ARMED FORCES
In 2018, before his 41st birthday, Adam joined the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves. He went on to receive the top NCM New Recruit Award. Of all of the awards that he received, Adam said this was one that he was particularly proud of considering the group of fine, young people he was among.
THE INSPIRATION FOR BETTER ADAM
In 2020, the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic swept the globe. Looking at the situation offensively, he accepted the opportunity to join Operation LASER - this was the Canadian Armed Forces' (CAF) response to a worldwide pandemic situation.
While in a "stay home, stay healthy, and be ready" pattern for the Operation, Adam had a lot of time to reflect on life. Through the funerals he attended and the moments of loss, grief, anxiety, and fear he experienced, Adam became deeply moved to his life differently. He realized that while he had worked very hard for everything he had, he also took life for granted - and he decided to find a way to live life in a way that he could get the most out of his experiences as possible.
Adam realized that in order to live a better life, he had to become a better version of himself. And that is when he made the decision to start his journey, he took his first step to becoming a better Adam.
